At Sri Guru Ramdas International Airport, the DRI Amritsar Zonal team seized gold worth approximately ₹1 crore from the luggage of two passengers arriving in Amritsar from Dubai. According to reports, the two passengers had concealed the gold inside their cargo pants. The gold was in the form of chains, bracelets, and rings.
It should be noted that a Customs clerk has previously been caught smuggling gold worth crores of rupees. Normally, the Customs Department’s Air Intelligence Wing and other staff seize gold at airports. However, this DRI action has once again raised questions about the Customs Department’s efficiency, as a single clerk would not have dared to smuggle gold. It remains to be seen what further investigations will reveal in this case.
