A group of tech enthusiasts from Karnataka have decided to take India’s 77th Republic Day to new heights.

Their goal is to hoist the Indian Tricolour at roughly one lakh feet—deep into the stratosphere—using a hydrogen balloon that will rise, burst and leave the flag fluttering in near‑space. The idea germinated after a drone’s 1,000‑foot ceiling and a conventional aircraft’s 15‑km limit both fell short.

The mission has already captured the nation’s imagination, with a viral video explaining the whole concept and a reel that’s crossed millions of views already.

To make it happen, the enthusiasts secured clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Airports Authority of India, ensuring the flight stays within legal airspace. Adding a commercial twist, quick‑commerce platform Zepto is funding the launch and even printed its logo on the balloon’s body, turning the experiment into a blend of national pride and brand storytelling.

If successful, this near‑space flag‑hoisting will set a world record for the highest ever such tribute.
