The New ‘Cyber Trap’ of Fake Challans: Learn How Scammers Are Seizing Control of Your Phone; Police Issue Advisory

Date:

In the era of Digital India, while conveniences have certainly increased, cybercriminals have devised a new and dangerous method of fraud. Currently, in Barnala and its surrounding areas, people are being targeted through ‘fake traffic challans’ (fines). Scammers are no longer merely sending links; instead, they are seizing complete control of your smartphone through a ‘.APK’ file.

The most alarming aspect of this scam is that the malicious software can even intercept the OTPs (One Time Passwords) received on your phone. The scammers initiate money transfers from your bank account, and the corresponding OTP is routed directly to them. Your account is drained before you even realize what has happened. Where to Seek Help? If you fall victim to this scam, immediately call the Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or file a report at your nearest police station. Your vigilance is your safety.

How Does This Scam Work?
According to investigations by the Cyber Cell, the fraudsters’ modus operandi is extremely cunning:

WhatsApp Message: First, a WhatsApp message is sent to the vehicle owner, featuring the official logo of the Traffic Police to make it appear authentic.
Alarming Notification: The message states that a traffic challan has been issued against your vehicle. You are instructed to install a file attached below to view the details or photographs related to the violation.
Malware Attack: The moment you click on that ‘.APK’ file, a spyware program is downloaded onto your phone.
Complete Control: This software grants the scammers unrestricted access to your phone’s gallery, contact list, and banking applications. Important Guidelines Issued by the Cyber Cell
The police administration and cyber experts have offered the following suggestions to citizens to help them stay safe:

Do not download suspicious files: Never open any unknown file received on WhatsApp (especially those with the ‘.apk’ extension).
Use only official portals: To verify the actual status of a traffic challan, use only ‘vahan.parivahan.gov.in’ or the ‘mParivahan’ app.
Adjust phone settings: Go to your mobile settings and ensure that the ‘Install from Unknown Sources’ option is always disabled.
Take immediate action: If you accidentally download an app, immediately disconnect from the internet and perform a factory reset (format) on your phone.
Remember: The Transport Department never sends any software or files via WhatsApp regarding traffic challans. Official notifications are always delivered via standard text messages.
