Intense heat continues to grip Punjab, along with the entire North Indian region. Although rainfall and hailstorms in the hilly areas may keep the weather relatively cool for the next few days, temperatures are expected to rise sharply thereafter, potentially subjecting people to severe heat conditions.
**Duration of Summer Vacations May Be Extended**
In light of the prevailing heatwave conditions, several states have already decided to declare school holidays earlier than usual this year. Consequently, there is speculation that—with the health and well-being of children in mind—a decision regarding the early declaration of school holidays may soon be taken in Punjab as well. There is also conjecture that the duration of the summer vacation might be extended this time around; typically, by the time schools close for the summer break, the heat has reached its peak, leaving parents constantly anxious about their children’s health. Parents are advocating for an immediate declaration of holidays—or at least a change in school timings—to ensure that children do not fall ill.
In previous years, the state administration has taken similar measures: whenever the heat becomes excessive, school holidays are declared as early as May and are subsequently extended into June. This year, too, discussions are underway suggesting that if the weather conditions persist in this manner, the summer vacation could be officially announced by the end of May.
