Dengue Risk Rises in District; Mosquito Larvae Found at 21 Sites During Health Department Inspection

Date:

The District Health Department conducted a special anti-dengue campaign today, focusing on Punjab Roadways workshops, PRTC bus depots, and associated junk yards. Discarded tires, scrap materials, and water-collecting containers at these locations are considered potential breeding grounds for dengue-spreading mosquitoes. During the inspection, the Health Department team discovered dengue mosquito larvae in 21 containers, which were destroyed on the spot. Additionally, through IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) activities, employees, workers, and the general public were educated about dengue symptoms, preventive measures, and the importance of maintaining a clean and dry environment.

As part of today’s special drive, teams visited a total of 177 units—including Punjab Roadways workshops and junk yards—covered 238 areas, inspected 9,422 households, and examined 21,843 containers for the presence of mosquito larvae. Larvae found in 21 containers were destroyed during the process.

Civil Surgeon Dr. Ramandeep Kaur stated, “If proper precautions are not taken, bus depots, workshops, junk yards, and discarded tires can become major breeding grounds for dengue mosquitoes. The Health Department cannot win the fight against dengue alone; active participation from every citizen and institution is essential. I appeal to all departments, transport personnel, and the general public not to allow water to stagnate anywhere in their surroundings.”

2,000 Suspected Cases Reported
According to health officials, over 2,000 suspected dengue cases have been reported in the district so far. Dengue infection has been confirmed in two patients following cross-verification.
