In a major operation, the Commissionerate Police in Amritsar arrested two individuals accused of demanding extortion from a businessman and opening fire at his shop. The arrested suspects have been identified as Jashanpreet Singh (alias Jashan) and Sajanpreet Singh (alias Sajan). Both were arrested on Monday from the Majitha area.
According to the police, while being brought to Amritsar after his arrest, Jashanpreet Singh attempted to escape and snatch a service carbine from the police. A shot fired during the ensuing scuffle struck him in his left leg. The injured suspect has been admitted to the Civil Hospital for treatment. Police officials stated that several rounds were fired at the shutter of a local businessman’s shop on July 1. Investigations revealed that the businessman had received threatening calls demanding extortion prior to the shooting. Although the businessman was initially hesitant to file a formal complaint, the police initiated a suo motu investigation after the matter came to the Commissionerate Police’s attention.
Case registered under the Arms Act
A case was registered at the Civil Lines Police Station under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act. Based on technical evidence and intelligence inputs, the police identified and named Jashanpreet Singh and Sajanpreet Singh as suspects. Separate police teams were formed to apprehend them; acting on credible information, the police conducted a raid in the Majitha area and arrested both individuals.
According to the police, Sajanpreet Singh sustained injuries while attempting to flee during the arrest. Meanwhile, Jashanpreet Singh was being transported to Amritsar in a police vehicle. Near Madan Mohan Malviya Marg, an animal suddenly appeared in front of the vehicle, forcing the driver to slow down. Seizing this opportunity, Jashanpreet scuffled with the police personnel and snatched the service carbine. ASI’s quick thinking averts tragedy
Police claim that the accused attempted to fire a carbine after aiming it at the police team. ASI Satnam Singh immediately forced the barrel of the carbine downwards. During the ensuing struggle, the trigger was pulled, and the bullet struck Jashanpreet in his left leg. According to the police, this action averted a potentially major attack on the police team.
The investigation also revealed that a case under the anti-narcotics law, involving the seizure of 260 grams of heroin, was already registered against Jashanpreet Singh. Following this incident, the police have registered another case against him at the Civil Lines police station under Sections 109, 221, 132, and 304(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as Section 25 of the Arms Act.
