Even nearly a year after the Supreme Court issued orders regarding the removal of stray cattle and bovines from the streets and ensuring their protection, the situation in Chandigarh and surrounding areas remains unchanged. Addressing this issue, the Chandigarh unit of ‘Gaumata Sevak’ has written to Deputy Commissioner Nitin Yadav, seeking a response from the administration.
The volunteers state that if no concrete action is taken within seven days, they will attempt to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Chandigarh on July 17 to present their case. The organization notes that a large number of stray cattle still roam the city streets, posing a persistent risk of road accidents. Furthermore, the condition of animals in several *gaushalas* (cattle shelters) is unsatisfactory. The organization alleges that despite clear Supreme Court directives, no effective action is visible at the administrative level. In the letter, the organization has sought information on seven key points regarding compliance with the Supreme Court’s orders.
These points include the name of the nodal officer appointed to oversee compliance, a copy of the compliance report filed with the Supreme Court, responsibilities assigned to officials across various departments, details of stray cattle removed from the streets so far, the establishment of a helpline, minutes of review meetings, and details of action taken against negligent officials.
Rohit Sharma and Mohit Sharma—the Punjab and Chandigarh State President and Secretary, respectively, of the Rashtriya Sanatan Sena Bharat (Sanatan Sarv Seva Sangh) Gau Raksha Dal—emphasized that the Supreme Court’s orders must be implemented with the utmost seriousness.
They stated that this is not merely an issue of animal welfare but also concerns public safety and the general interest. The organization has demanded that the administration make full details regarding compliance public and take effective measures for a permanent solution to the problem of stray cattle.
