The growing menace of stray dogs in Ferozepur Cantonment has become a matter of serious concern. On Tuesday, a child was severely mauled by stray dogs. This incident has once again raised questions regarding the increasing stray dog population in the area and the safety of citizens. According to locals, packs of 15 to 20 dogs are frequently seen roaming various parts of the cantonment. Residents are distressed by incidents where dogs lunge at pedestrians and two-wheeler riders at night. An atmosphere of fear prevails among morning walkers, children, and the elderly.
**Systematic Solution, Not Just Catching, Needed to Curb the Menace**
Local residents argue that the problem cannot be solved merely by catching a few dogs and relocating them. The administration needs to formulate a permanent and scientific action plan. This should include area-wise enumeration of stray dogs, large-scale sterilization and anti-rabies vaccination, record-keeping for identification, and regular monitoring. Additionally, proper veterinary facilities and safe shelters must be arranged for injured, sick, and aggressive dogs. There should also be regular oversight of shelter management and operations to ensure the system does not remain confined to paperwork alone.
