Buying and selling used vehicles in Punjab becomes easier; OTP no longer required for RC transfer

Date:

There is welcome news for dealers involved in the business of buying and selling used vehicles. The State Transport Department has simplified the process of transferring the Registration Certificate (RC) for used vehicles.

The mandatory requirement for the previous owner’s mobile number and the associated OTP (One-Time Password) has been removed for transferring the RC of used vehicles—including cars, motorcycles, scooters, and trucks—to the new owner. Now, the RC transfer can be completed by verifying identity using an Aadhaar card and other prescribed documents.

Notably, the Transport Department had previously made it mandatory to link the former owner’s mobile number with the documents for RC transfers.

The objective was to verify the actual owner’s identity and authenticate documents, ensuring vehicle details could be confirmed in cases of theft or other disputes. Previously, an OTP was sent to the former owner’s mobile number during the transfer process. Requirement for OTP removed.

The process could only proceed after the OTP was verified. Vehicle dealers state that removing the mobile OTP requirement will boost the trade of used vehicles.

Buyers will no longer have to wait for an OTP to be sent to the previous owner’s mobile after purchasing a vehicle. This will also make the RC transfer process easier than before.

RC can be transferred to the new owner’s name
Car dealers Shashikant and Anoop stated that customers would find relief now that this dependency has been removed. RTO Mankanwal Singh explained that the RC can now be transferred to the new owner’s name by completing identity verification using the vehicle’s prescribed documents and an Aadhaar card. This will provide greater convenience to the public.
