A modest initiative by two friends—starting with the production of just five kilograms of *amla* (Indian gooseberry) preserve (*murabba*)—has set an inspiring example. This endeavor, aimed at women’s empowerment and self-reliance, has now gained national recognition following praise from the Prime Minister.
When Modi spoke about the hardworking women of Pratapgarh’s ‘Savitri Bai Phule Self-Help Group’ during his *Mann Ki Baat* radio program on Sunday, it was as if the women’s dreams had been given wings.
The self-help group, operating in Devgarh Kamasin within the district’s Raniganj *tehsil*, came into existence in July 2020. Kamlesh Kumari and other women from the village used to work with the BAIF organization—an entity dedicated to livestock development and farmers’ welfare. While working there, Kamlesh Kumari and her friend Sushma felt inspired to form their own group and shape their own destinies. Although they initially discussed the idea in the village, they found no support. Undeterred, they visited the Gaura Block office, submitted an application, and launched the group under the name ‘Savitri Bai Phule.’ Sushma was appointed as the group’s secretary. A significant turning point arrived in 2021 when they secured a loan of ₹1.10 lakh and distributed the amount equally among ten women; some ventured into goat rearing, while others opened tailoring shops.
Purchased a *barfi*-making machine too
Amita, Kavita, Asha, Meena, Rekha, Jyoti, Malti, Lata, and Sumitra began their respective ventures, while Kamlesh and Sushma focused on producing *amla* products. They accelerated their operations by purchasing a *barfi*-making machine (for ₹80,000) and a juice-making machine (for ₹27,000) from Kanpur. Seeing their progress, other women also began showing interest in making amla (Indian gooseberry) pickle, juice, *barfi*, and *laddus*. They are earning over ₹20,000 per month.
Kamlesh is a graduate. The group also produces items like masks, *rakhis*, and candles, though amla products remain their priority. Chairperson Kamlesh Kumari earns more than ₹20,000 monthly.
Dev Kumar, the Deputy Commissioner (Self-Employment), states that several groups in the district are performing well. The appreciation expressed by the Prime Minister has provided the motivation to perform even better.
