On Monday, the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to three scientists. These scientists were working on the nervous system, specifically developing methods to switch the activity of distinct nerve cells in the brain on or off.
Three Scientists Receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine
The Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded to Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel from Germany, and Karl Deisseroth from the United States. The trio conducted research on light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. They are affiliated with universities in Germany and the United States.
Commending their work, the Nobel Committee wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that this technique is now being used in laboratories worldwide to unravel the mysteries of the brain.
According to the Nobel Committee, the discovery made by these three scientists has opened a new avenue of research for understanding the brain. This discovery is also being applied to the study of eye diseases; scientists are currently investigating whether it can be used to restore vision in people who have lost their sight. Start of Nobel Week
The announcement was made at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, marking the beginning of Nobel Week. Following the Medicine prize on Monday, the awards for Physics (Tuesday), Chemistry (Wednesday), and Literature (Thursday) will be announced. After the Peace Prize is awarded on Friday, the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences will be announced on October 12.
