The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has intensified its preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The party is expected to release its first list of candidates today, marking an important step in its election preparations. According to reports, around 30 to 35 names were discussed during the party’s internal deliberations.
The early announcement of candidates is being seen as part of AAP’s strategy to begin its election campaign well in advance. By declaring candidates ahead of the elections, the party aims to give its nominees sufficient time to connect with voters, strengthen their presence in their respective constituencies and prepare for the electoral contest.
Punjab’s political landscape is expected to witness an active election campaign as parties begin organising their strategies for 2027. AAP, which currently governs the state, is focusing on strengthening its organisational structure and assessing potential candidates for different constituencies.
The party’s senior leadership held a meeting in New Delhi on Friday to discuss the upcoming elections and shortlist potential candidates. The meeting was attended by AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Punjab affairs in-charge Manish Sisodia. Punjab AAP president Aman Arora and Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema also participated through video conferencing.
Following the meeting, Bhagwant Mann confirmed that the names discussed would be placed before the party’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) for final approval. The committee is scheduled to meet again on October 31 at 11 AM, with the first list expected to be announced around noon.
An important aspect of the candidate selection process is public feedback. Mann stated that the party would consider voters’ opinions and the performance of sitting MLAs before deciding who would receive tickets. The party is also expected to consider survey findings while evaluating potential candidates.
The AAP leadership is also discussing its broader election strategy. The party intends to highlight the work carried out by the Punjab government in sectors such as education, healthcare, electricity, irrigation, roads and infrastructure.
Punjab has 117 Assembly constituencies, and the current Assembly’s five-year term is scheduled to end on March 16, 2027. The elections are expected in early 2027, although the Election Commission has not yet announced the official polling schedule.
By announcing candidates well ahead of the elections, AAP aims to provide its nominees with sufficient time to establish contact with voters, strengthen their organisational networks and prepare their constituency-level campaigns.
The announcement of the first list will also offer an indication of the party’s approach towards sitting MLAs, ministers and new faces. Whether the party retains its existing legislators or introduces changes in several constituencies will become clearer once the official names are released.
With the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections approaching, AAP has started moving into election mode. The first candidate list, expected to be announced today, could set the tone for the party’s campaign and intensify political activity across Punjab.
