Punjab and Haryana High Court’s Big Order in Daljit Singh Death Case: Fresh Postmortem at PGI, Body to Be Handed Over Within 15 Hours

Date:

A major development has emerged in the Daljit Singh death case in Punjab’s Mansa district. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered a fresh postmortem examination of Daljit Singh at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. The court has directed that his mortal remains be handed over to PGI authorities within 15 hours for the fresh examination.

The decision comes amid growing tensions and protests surrounding the circumstances of Daljit Singh’s death. His family had approached the High Court seeking a fresh postmortem at PGI and an independent investigation into the matter.

Two Different Claims About Daljit’s Death

Daljit Singh, a 35-year-old resident of Bhamme Kalan village in Mansa district, was found dead on October 27, 2026.

There are conflicting claims surrounding his death. His family has alleged that he died due to a drug overdose and has raised concerns about the growing drug menace in Punjab.

On the other hand, the police have registered a murder case, claiming that there were injury marks on his body. The initial postmortem examination conducted at AIIMS Bathinda reportedly recorded eight distinct injuries.

Considering these conflicting versions, the High Court has ordered another postmortem examination at PGI to establish the nature of the injuries and bring greater clarity to the circumstances surrounding his death.

Cremation in Chandigarh, Political Leaders Barred

The High Court has also issued specific directions regarding the last rites of Daljit Singh.

According to the court’s order, the cremation will take place at the Sector 25 cremation ground in Chandigarh after the fresh postmortem examination.

Only close family members and relatives will be permitted to attend the last rites. The court has specifically prohibited political leaders, political parties and other organisations from participating in or interfering with the cremation arrangements.

The Punjab and Chandigarh Police have been directed to ensure adequate security and protect the family from any intimidation or harassment during the entire process.

High Court Seeks Timely Completion of Proceedings

The court has directed the Punjab and Chandigarh Directors General of Police, along with PGI authorities, to coordinate the transfer of the body and complete the necessary formalities without delay.

The authorities have also been instructed to expedite the forensic examination of the viscera so that the relevant findings can be placed before the court.

The matter is scheduled for further hearing on November 5, 2026, at 1:45 PM.

The High Court’s intervention comes at a time when Daljit Singh’s death has become a sensitive issue in Mansa, with public protests and allegations surrounding the police response.
