A major administrative step has been taken to elevate ‘Grappling’—a modern form of martial arts and wrestling in India—to new heights. Prof. Sikander Kumar, a prominent leader from Himachal Pradesh and a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, has been unanimously appointed as the new Chairman of the Grappling Federation of India (GFI). Subodh Kumar Yadav, the General Secretary of the Grappling Federation of India, issued an official letter inviting Prof. Kumar to assume this prestigious and advisory role. Prof. Sikander Kumar is not only an experienced politician but also possesses extensive experience in the fields of education and administration. Sports experts believe that his association with the federation will lead to increased government support; furthermore, leveraging his influence as an MP, it is expected that Grappling will secure a more prominent position within government policies and budgetary allocations. This move is expected to boost the morale of athletes and pave the way for national-level competitors to access better facilities and infrastructure. In his capacity as Chairman, he will provide strategic guidance to the federation, thereby enabling Indian athletes to win more medals in international tournaments.
Grappling: A Step Towards the Olympics
It is noteworthy that the Grappling Federation of India (GFI) is recognized by ‘United World Wrestling’ (UWW)—the world’s largest wrestling governing body. Given that Grappling is being viewed as a potential future Olympic sport, Prof. Sikander Kumar’s leadership will be instrumental in firmly establishing India’s standing on the global stage. In its official letter, the federation explicitly stated that Prof. Sikander Kumar’s distinguished public life and his deep passion for sports represent a significant asset for the federation. We are confident that his guidance will not only inspire the athletes but will also prove to be a milestone in the grassroots expansion of Grappling.
Upon assuming the office of Chairman, Prof. Sikander Kumar is expected to launch special campaigns across various states of the country aimed at establishing sports academies and steering the youth away from substance abuse by encouraging their participation in sports. Sports enthusiasts from Himachal Pradesh and other states have welcomed this appointment, and numerous sports associations, social organizations, and prominent personalities across the country have extended their congratulations and best wishes for the future.
