Political speculation regarding a potential alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections has intensified once again. Following the BJP’s refusal to enter into any agreement with the party associated with Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, a recent statement by BJP leader Nitin Navin is being viewed as a sign of renewed possibilities for the relationship with the Akali Dal.
BJP State General Secretary and former IAS officer Jagmohan Raju has claimed that some leaders from Amritpal Singh’s party had proposed an alliance with the BJP.
However, he stated that the BJP has made it clear it will contest the 2027 Punjab elections on all 117 seats on its own strength. Raju’s statement has sparked a fresh debate in Punjab’s political circles regarding the political options the BJP is considering. Meanwhile, in an interview with a news channel in Delhi, BJP leader Nitin Navin stated that the party’s objective is to strengthen its organization in Punjab and that it is assessing all political circumstances. He also indicated that the party is keeping all options open regarding its future strategy.
In political circles, this statement is being interpreted as a signal of potential dialogue with the Shiromani Akali Dal. The BJP and the Akali Dal share a long political history.
For over three decades, the two parties were allies within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), but the Shiromani Akali Dal severed ties with the BJP in 2020 in protest against the Centre’s farm laws. Subsequently, both parties contested the 2022 and 2024 elections separately. However, since the Lok Sabha elections, there have been periodic discussions regarding a possible reconciliation between the two parties. Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal President Sukhbir Singh Badal had also stated that his party’s entire focus is currently on strengthening its organization in Punjab. However, he did not explicitly rule out the possibility of a future alliance with the BJP.
Sukhbir had mentioned that no talks are currently underway. The BJP’s dismissal of a potential alliance with Amritpal Singh’s party, coupled with Nitin Navin’s balanced statement, has reignited speculation regarding Akali-BJP relations.
All eyes are on the strategies of both parties ahead of the upcoming municipal elections and the 2027 assembly elections. Against this backdrop, new political equations could emerge in Punjab in the coming months.
