Thousands Longing for Just One Mark: CBSE Dashes Students’ and Parents’ Hopes; Complaints Flood Social Media

Date:

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) began updating the results for the re-evaluation and verification of Class 12 examinations on June 21. There was an expectation that errors resulting from the Board’s processes would be rectified, but the outcome has only deepened the disappointment among students and parents. A barrage of complaints from students has flooded social media platforms.

**Disappointing Results**
Many students who applied for re-evaluation have complained to the Board that there was little to no increase in their marks. Several students claim that even in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and the MCQ sections, their scores rose by only 1–4 marks, whereas they had anticipated a more significant improvement. Although the Board maintains that the entire process was conducted under the supervision of experts, the results remain disheartening. **Urgent Demand for New Marksheets**
Mohammad Faiz Sheikh, a student from GAV Public School, Patoda (Jhajjar), lodged a complaint on the Board’s official post. He stated that while he had applied for re-evaluation only in Computer Science (083)—where his marks correctly increased from 12 to 23—his marks for the Chemistry (043) theory paper were erroneously reduced from 23 to 13, despite no application having been made for that subject. The student has urgently demanded the rectification of this serious error and the issuance of a new marksheet. **Setback in JEE/NIT Admissions**
Students have expressed their anger and frustration in hundreds of comments on CBSE’s official post on the social media platform ‘X’. Many reported that correct MCQ answers were marked incorrect, answer sheets were not properly evaluated, and they missed the 75% aggregate requirement for JEE/NIT admissions by a mere 1–2 marks. **Collective Demand by Students**
CBSE Class 12 students have also collectively voiced their demands. They have even created a WhatsApp group for this purpose. They have demanded that…

Copies of re-evaluated answer sheets be made available to all applicants free of cost.
The passing criteria for theory and practical exams for the 2025-26 batch be lowered from 33 percent.
Students have termed issues such as unchecked MCQs, the absence of step-marking, blurred answer sheets, and a lack of transparency in the entire process as completely unacceptable.
Launching a mass tweeting campaign, students have appealed to everyone to unite and raise these demands.
Demand for immediate intervention
One student wrote, “One of my MCQs was marked incorrectly… yet my marks did not increase. I feel completely helpless.” A parent mentioned that their son expected 19 marks in Chemistry, but there was zero increase. Many students stated they needed just one more mark and appealed for grace marks or immediate intervention. Meanwhile, some students claimed that corrections were not fully implemented despite emailing proof of correct answers.

Board’s clarification
In an official document, the CBSE clarified that re-evaluation is a review process and there is no guarantee of a change in marks. Revised results are being uploaded to DigiLocker in a phased manner.

The Board stated that every application was examined on its merits by two evaluators and supervised by IIT experts and officials. The Board also provided information regarding reduced fees, refunds for additional payments (if applicable), and facilities like a 24/7 mental health helpline.

What should affected students do next?
However, despite these assurances, distressed reactions from students dominate social media. Many students have expressed fears about ruined careers and cancelled college admissions, while demanding proper support. The CBSE has advised students to check their status on the DigiLocker portal using their roll numbers and other credentials. Physical inspection of answer sheets at regional offices regarding other issues will commence soon. A notification for the supplementary/improvement examination is also expected to be issued shortly.

Meanwhile, with admission deadlines for various courses fast approaching, the minimal changes resulting from re-evaluation have caused deep concern among Class 12 students and their parents. This situation is sparking a fresh debate regarding evaluation standards and student support within India’s competitive education system.
