UPI payments just got smarter! Learn about the new changes starting today.
From today, October 8, 2025, digital payments in India will become even easier and more secure. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that users will now be able to approve UPI transactions using facial recognition and fingerprints.
Not just PINs, but also biometric payments
Under this new feature, entering a PIN will no longer be necessary. Biometric data will be securely processed through the Aadhaar system. Users will be able to make fast and secure payments by simply entering their identity into their phones. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently approved alternative authentication. NPCI is working to make transactions faster, safer, and fraud-free through this new technology.

Biometric authentication will reduce PIN theft and fraud.
This feature will be beneficial for elderly citizens and those living in rural areas who have difficulty remembering PINs.
Data Security
NPCI has clarified that biometric data will only be encrypted on the phone; Neither the bank nor NPCI will store or access it. Users can enable or disable this feature at any time.
This initiative is considered crucial to making digital payment systems in India secure, seamless, and widespread. NPCI will showcase it at the Mumbai Global Fintech Festival.
