The weather across Punjab has taken a sudden turn. Cloudy skies have been observed since Friday morning, with light rain falling in many areas. The rain and cool winds have brought a drop in temperatures. While this change in weather has brought relief from the heat and humidity, it is also having an impact on health.
Drop in Temperature, Increased Humidity
According to the Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain is expected to continue in Amritsar and surrounding areas over the next 24 hours. The city’s maximum temperature is expected to hover around 28 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature around 18 degrees Celsius. The increased humidity in the air signals the onset of winter.
Impact on Health
According to doctors, the sudden change in weather could lead to the rapid spread of seasonal infections such as colds, coughs, fevers, and sore throats. Elderly people, children, and asthma patients have been advised to take special precautions. As advised by doctors, wear warm clothes in the morning and at night, avoid cold water or ice cream, drink lukewarm water, and inhale steam to prevent a sore throat. Wear a mask when going out, as cold winds and pollution can simultaneously impact health. Consume seasonal fruits and foods rich in vitamin C to maintain immunity.
Increased Dengue Risk
According to health officials, after rain, the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which spreads dengue, breeds rapidly in water stagnant in flower pots, tanks, coolers, and open containers. Early symptoms of dengue include high fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches, and a red rash. If these symptoms appear, get a blood test done immediately and avoid self-medication.
