The countdown to mayoral elections in eight major municipal corporations of Punjab has begun. The mayoral post has been designated for the general category in seven corporations and reserved for a specific category in one. Following orders issued by the State Election Authority and the Department of Local Government, mayoral elections will soon be held for the municipal corporations of Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Kapurthala, Moga, Patiala, and Mohali.
The notification issued prior to the election clarifies that, this time, the mayoral post across all eight municipal corporations will be reserved for the general (open) category. The election process has been finalized following the completion of the reservation procedure under the ‘Punjab Reservation of the Offices of Mayors of Municipal Corporations Rules, 2017’. Consequently, political activity within the municipal corporations has intensified. Various political parties have begun devising strategies to keep their councilors united and secure the mayoral post.
**Special Meeting to be Convened**
According to the issued guidelines, the mayoral election will not be conducted during a standard corporation meeting but rather in a specially convened meeting. An authorized officer appointed by the government will preside over the election. During the meeting, nominations for the mayoral post will be accepted first, followed by the voting process.
