The sudden release of water upstream into the Ravi River caused the earthen ramp at the end of the pontoon bridge at Makoda Pattan to be swept away by the surging current. Consequently, connectivity for residents of half a dozen villages located across the river has been completely cut off. People who rely on this route daily for work, education, farming, and other essential activities are facing significant difficulties. Locals reported that the river’s water level rose abruptly without prior warning, washing away the earthen ramps constructed on both sides of the bridge. While vehicular movement had already ceased, crossing even on foot is now impossible. Meanwhile, officials from the concerned department stated that a boat service would be launched as soon as the water level recedes. They noted that with the onset of the rainy season, the pontoon bridge would be dismantled within the next day or two, and boats would operate at regular intervals to facilitate public movement. They also assured that immediate steps would be taken to restore connectivity via boat services once the water level drops. For now, however, people are forced to endure long waits for the boat. Residents of the area have urged the government and administration to find a permanent solution to this issue so that they do not have to face such problems every time the water level rises.
