The Central Government has issued a significant notification regarding the 2027 census. Under the new decision, the census process in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, and Uttarakhand will commence on December 1, 2026, and continue until January 4, 2027. According to the Registrar General of India, the census process is being initiated early in states where Assembly elections are scheduled for the beginning of next year.
A government notification issued by Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, states that the census process in these states will be completed ahead of schedule in view of the upcoming Assembly elections.
It is noteworthy that the terms of the Legislative Assemblies of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Manipur, and Uttarakhand are set to expire by May 2027. Consequently, conducting timely Assembly elections in these states will be essential. However, following a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, it has been decided to defer the census in Manipur for the time being.
