Dealing a major blow to an international drug trafficking network, the Kapurthala Police have busted a Pakistan-backed narcotics smuggling module. The police have arrested four accused individuals—including one woman—and recovered 16.8 kilograms of heroin from their possession. This information was shared by Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav here on Tuesday.
The arrested accused have been identified as Balwinder Singh (a resident of Pandori Mohalla, Sultanpur Lodhi), Sumanpreet Kaur (a resident of Gohalwar, Amritsar), and Harpal Singh and Jaskaranbir Singh (both residents of Dauke village, Amritsar). In addition to the heroin consignment, police teams have also seized the grey Maruti Baleno car in which the accused were traveling.
The DGP stated that preliminary investigations have revealed that this drug trafficking operation was being conducted at the behest of handlers based in Pakistan and Dubai. The consignment was brought in from the Amritsar border region and was intended for delivery in Chandigarh.
Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora informed that, acting on a tip-off, police teams in Phagwara had strategically laid a trap. When the police attempted to intercept the suspects’ Baleno car, the accused tried to run over the police team in an attempt to escape.
