Giving a new twist to Punjab’s political equations, two prominent Panthic factions—’Akali Dal Waris Punjab’ and ‘Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit)’—today announced a strategic alliance, setting aside their mutual differences. The leadership of this newly formed committee has been unanimously entrusted to Manpreet Singh Ayali, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Dakha. This decision has intensified discussions within the state’s political corridors.
This move is being viewed as a major effort to consolidate the long-fragmented Panthic vote bank onto a single platform. If this coordination committee succeeds in polarizing the Panthic votes, it could pose a significant challenge to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the traditional Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal).
Prominent political analyst Bhupinder Singh Sekhon observes that this newfound unity has shaken up the existing political landscape. However, a question is also being raised within political circles: will this alliance be able to emerge as a “strong third alternative” in Punjab and effectively challenge the traditional parties? Only time will provide the answer.
