Municipal Corporation Commissioner Amit Kumar is very strict about new recruitment and employees above 60 years of age. He has strictly instructed the heads of all branches and wings not to make any new recruitment and no employee in their branch should be above 60 years of age.
Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is going to assess the required number of employees to cut down its expenses. For this, preparations are being made to get an audit done by the New Delhi-based Indian Institute of Public Administration (IIPA) for the first time.
If more employees are found after the audit, then many employees may face layoffs. On the other hand, the process of removing employees above 60 years of age is also going on. In the last two months, services of more than 50 employees have been terminated.
Audit of the number of employees for the first time
For the first time, preparations are being made to get an audit done of the number of employees and their requirements in the Municipal Corporation. The corporation is constantly being accused of recruiting more employees than required. Many councillors have also raised questions about this and senior officials of the administration have also said in meetings that the corporation has more outsourced workers. It was said that the corporation needs to know how many employees it actually needs so that unnecessary expenses can be stopped. For this reason, New Delhi’s IIPA was contacted to conduct the audit and quotations were sought from them.
IIPA has agreed to conduct the audit and has asked for six months’ time. Also, it was told that their fee for this would be around Rs 25 lakh. Now the corporation has to take a decision on this. Let us tell you that IIPA has expertise in administrative efficiency and proper use of resources. According to Municipal Corporation officials, this process will find out the real needs and unnecessary expenses can be reduced.
Branch heads will give affidavit whether any new recruitment was done or not
Commissioner Amit Kumar said that for this he is also taking an affidavit from the heads of various branches and wings. Apart from this, he has also asked for the data of the working employees. If after issuing their orders, any new employee is found joining in any branch or any person above 60 years of age is found working in their branch, then strict action will be taken against the head of that branch.
50-60 employees fired in two months
The corporation is now taking several steps to deal with the financial crisis. In December 2024, Commissioner Amit Kumar had ordered the dismissal of outsourced employees aged 60 years or above with immediate effect. The corporation has not compiled the data yet, but according to officials, so far 50-60 employees have been removed in the last one to two months. Apart from this, recently the services of 11 sanitation officers were also terminated, who used to be on night patrolling. The corporation found that additional employees were not required for this work.
