Chandigarh Cyber Crime Police Station has achieved a major success, they have arrested three people who threatened a man and extorted money by making virtual calls. In this case, Mr. Harinath Singh had lodged a complaint that he received a call on his mobile number 96717xxxxx on 2 October 24 from mobile number 92709xxxxx. The caller told that a SIM card has been issued against his Aadhaar card and many frauds have been done through that mobile number. The caller asked him to talk with Mumbai Police on WhatsApp number 89262xxxxx, where the police officer told him that he is involved in Naresh Goyal money laundering case and he also has an account opened in Canara Bank, in which transactions of Rs 6 crore 80 lakh have taken place in which Harinath has received 10 percent commission. The police officer threatened to arrest him and said that all his mobile numbers will also be switched off in a short while. He gave him a number and asked him to keep it confidential and said that now they will talk further through WhatsApp. He also refused to talk to his family members about this.
During the investigation, the police obtained the information of the suspect and found that the virtual call and WhatsApp received by Shri Harinath was from Cambodia. In further investigation, KYC information of the suspicious account was obtained and after its analysis, two suspicious persons were arrested from New Delhi and NCR.
Apart from this, another suspect person Hasnain Haider, 24, was arrested from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Police recovered a mobile phone and SIM card from him, which was used in the crime. Hasnain Haider told that he had opened a savings account in Federal Bank on the instructions of an unknown person and he used to get 5% commission on every transaction. Rs 1.50 lakh fraud money has also been recovered from this and further investigation is going on.
With these arrests, the police successfully solved the case registered under FIR No. 109, dated 22.11.2024.
The police have asked all the city residents to contact the police if they receive such calls and avoid giving money to anyone out of fear. They have asked to immediately inform the police helpline number about such calls.
