In the meeting of the House, first of all, there will be a discussion on the revised estimate of the financial year 2024-25 and the budget estimate of the year 2025-26. The corporation officials will inform the House about the expenditure and means of earning for the whole year. The questions asked by four councilors will be discussed.
The House meeting of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has started. The budget for the year 2025-26 will be discussed in the meeting, in which a provision of Rs 1864.92 crore is proposed. The meeting was chaired by Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla.
During the House, the councilors say that when we will only talk about the salary of officers and employees, then what is the need to discuss the budget. We have come to talk about the budget for the development of the city but here only the salary is being emphasized. There was also a dispute between the councilor and the Municipal Commissioner for some time regarding this matter.
Stamp and entertainment duty should be given as per the Act: Joshi
BJP councillor and lawyer Saurabh Joshi, citing section 90(6) of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Law (Extension to Chandigarh) Act, 1994, said that at the end of the year, a part or full share of various types of taxes should be given to the Municipal Corporation. He said that it is written in the Act that under the Indian Stamp Act 1899, the Municipal Corporation will get a part of the stamp duty levied on those properties which have been transferred in the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation. According to the Punjab Motor Vehicles Taxation Act 1924, the corporation will get the tax on vehicles. Under the Punjab Electricity (Duty) Act 1958, a part of the tax on electricity will be given. Under the Punjab Entertainments Duty Act, 1955, the Municipal Corporation will get a part of the tax levied on entertainment from those people who avail entertainment in the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation. The municipal corporation will get its share of tax from cinema hall owners under the Punjab Entertainments Tax (Cinematograph Shows) Act 1954. This provision applies to public cinema shows held in cinema halls.
