A habeas corpus petition was filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the arrest of farmer leaders Jagjit Singh Dallewal, Sarwan Singh Pandher and other farmers by the Punjab government on March 19, calling their arrest illegal. Late in the evening, the High Court, while hearing the petition, issued a notice to the Punjab government in the matter and ordered the DGP to file a status report of the case on Monday.
The petition has been filed by Gurmukh Singh, President of Bharatiya Kisan Union Doaba. The petition states that Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been arrested without giving any notice and without giving any reason, which is illegal. He demanded from the High Court that he be released immediately.
Congress creates ruckus in the Punjab Assembly against the action on farmers
Farmers, angry with the police action on Shambhu and Khanauri border, took to the streets on Friday to express their anger. Farmers associated with Shaheed Bhagat Singh Union and Samyukt Kisan Mazdoor Inquilab Union burnt effigies of Punjab government in grain markets in both Ambala city and Shahzadpur in Haryana and expressed their anger. Aam Aadmi Party was the target of the farmers.
On the other hand, the opposition party Congress in Punjab created a ruckus on the first day of the budget session of the Assembly on Friday and boycotted the address of Governor Gulab Chand Kataria with slogans of ‘Jai Jawan-Jai Kisan’. Congress MLAs reached the well and started sloganeering and then walked out of the House.
Khanauri border not fully opened
The work of clearing the National Highway continued on Friday in Khanauri of Sangrur, which was closed for 13 months. The highway has not been opened yet. Out of the 300 tractor-trolleys removed from the highway on Friday, farmers reached to take about 150 tractor trolleys.
Google still showing it closed
Despite the opening of Shambhu border, the road is still being shown closed on Google Maps app. Drivers are getting troubled due to diverted routes being shown on Google Maps.
Shambhu Toll Plaza started after 405 days
Shambhu Toll Plaza started after 405 days. Toll collection started at 8 am on Friday. In this 405 day period, a total of 42 farmers and two policemen lost their lives while 115 farmers were injured.
At the same time, six out of 15 Haryana Roadways buses going to Punjab, which were closed due to the closure of Shambhu Toll, started running on Friday, nine buses are still left. On the first day, more than 22 thousand vehicles had passed through Shambhu Toll in the first nine hours.
