The Punjab and Haryana High Court has summoned a status report from the Punjab government on the preparation of high-tech security in Punjab’s jails.
The division bench of Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal and Justice Deepak Manchanda expressed concern over serious issues like criminal activities inside the jails, use of mobile phones and security lapses.
During the hearing, Chief Secretary KAP Sinha appeared on behalf of the Punjab government through video conferencing. He told the court that the work of purchasing and installing many high-tech equipment has started to increase security in the jails.
AI based CCTV systems will be installed in 14 jails
In the affidavit filed by him, it was told that AI based CCTV systems are being installed in 14 jails. Apart from this, arrangements are also being made for 16 small and three big X-ray baggage machines, 295 CCTV cameras, 90 body worn cameras, 16 under vehicle mirrors, live wire fencing in 23 jails, wire mesh in high security zones of four jails, 110 anti-riot kits, 16 e-carts and 57 e-bikes.
Approval to install V-Kavach jammer
The Chief Secretary also informed that in the state cabinet meeting held on May 9, 2025, approval has been given to install V-Kavach jammer. Also, in-principle consent has been given for the recruitment of 500 new jail employees and within a month this proposal will be sent to the Staff Selection Board.
The court directed that the Chief Secretary should file a detailed affidavit before the next hearing in which the action taken so far, administrative approvals and the latest timeline should be clearly stated. The court also asked the government to send the proposals forward for decision as soon as possible. Now the next hearing of this case will be on 28th May.
