The flood crisis has deepened once again in Punjab’s Fazilka district. Following heavy rains, the situation has worsened in many villages, with water entering homes and crops being destroyed once again.
The floodwaters that occurred about a month and a half ago had recently receded, and people were just getting their lives back on track when water from Pakistan again flooded their fields and homes. According to villagers, the water level rose by about 3 feet overnight, closing the bridge connecting Teja Ruhela and Maujam villages. Furthermore, the Sutlej River in Ferozepur has also risen due to backflow.
Residents of Kalu Wala village reported that the release of approximately 40,000 cusecs of water, coupled with the river’s rapid flow, has damaged their crops. The villagers have appealed to the Punjab government to build strong embankments (dam-like structures) along the river bank to protect the nearby villages from rising water levels.
