The Punjab government is taking a tough stand after the floods. Major action is now underway against illegal constructions built along the banks of rivers, canals, and drains in Punjab. The government has identified 850 locations across the state where illegal houses, shops, and other structures will be demolished soon. FIRs are also being filed at all these locations.
According to reports, no construction will be permitted without permission within a 150-meter radius of any river, canal, or drain. If anyone violates the rules, the relevant department will take immediate action and demolish the illegal structure. The state government has decided to intensify this action after the floods to prevent future waterlogging and accidents. The Irrigation Department has clarified that no one has the right to construct near a canal or drainage system without permission.
Under this policy, hotels, restaurants, and residential buildings will also be required to obtain departmental approval. This means that obtaining an NOC from the Drainage Department will be necessary. For this, a state-level action team will first visit the site and inspect. The Drainage Department has initiated the process of issuing a notification, stating that those constructing without permission will face legal action, as well as bulldozing. According to department officials, this step will play a crucial role in environmental protection and the smooth management of water flow.
According to information received, senior department officials will meet with the Advocate General’s Office to formulate a new strategy, and teams will conduct surveys in each district. A notification for this will be issued soon. Violators will be subject to bulldozing under Section 55 and Section 3 of the North India Canal and Drainage Act.
