From November 1st, electricity used in Chandigarh, from domestic to commercial, industrial, and other sectors, has become one percent more expensive. Domestic consumers have now been divided into 3 categories, with different rates set for each.
The number of consumption slabs has also been increased from 2 to 5. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) announced the new electricity rates for Chandigarh and all other Union Territories on Thursday. For the current financial year, JERC has approved a one percent increase in the existing rates. Although Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) had demanded a 7.57 percent increase in the existing rates, JERC approved only a one percent increase.
For the next 5 years, JERC has approved only a 2 percent annual increase in rates. Following the increase in electricity rates by JERC, CPDL will now receive revenue of Rs 1075 crore in the form of bills from November onwards, while it will have to spend Rs 1157 crore annually.
