Civil Surgeon Dr. Amarjit Kaur issued an advisory on air pollution, stating that with the change in weather and increasing pollution, the air quality deteriorates, leading to an increase in patients suffering from respiratory problems, asthma, rhinitis, colds, coughs, and chest diseases.
She appealed to people to protect themselves from pollution. She said that burning crop residue has a very negative impact on the environment and human health. This is especially harmful for children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people suffering from chronic respiratory illnesses. She urged people to use the CPCB website to check pollution levels. On days with poor and severe air pollution, people should avoid going out in the morning and late evening, avoid jogging, running, or other strenuous physical activities, and avoid opening doors and windows during the morning and late evening hours.
People should also avoid going near areas with high pollution levels. She said that if anyone experiences difficulty breathing, coughing, chest discomfort or pain, dizziness, or eye irritation (redness or watering), they should consult a doctor immediately. Pregnant women, young children, and the elderly should minimize outdoor activities as much as possible. Burning any kind of wood, leaves, or crop residue in the open should be avoided to prevent environmental pollution. To reduce the harmful effects of pollution, people should eat seasonal fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants and drink plenty of water.
