To enhance the safety of cyclists and pedestrians in the southern sectors, the administration has devised a plan to install streetlights along the cycle tracks at a cost of approximately ₹1.95 crore. The project aims to prevent incidents such as snatching, robbery, and other crimes that occur after dark, while ensuring a safe environment for cyclists. According to officials, the presence of numerous vacant plots, trees, and sparsely populated areas causes these zones to plunge into darkness as soon as evening falls.
Consequently, concerns regarding safety in these areas have mounted over the past few years. Police records indicate that poorly lit and deserted stretches have become easy targets for criminals. The administration believes that the installation of streetlights will not only improve visibility but also act as a deterrent against criminal activities. The UT Engineering Department has initiated the tendering process for the project; bids have been invited, and work is expected to commence soon.
Over 200 km of cycle tracks in the city
It is worth noting that the city boasts a cycle track network spanning over 200 km, originally developed to promote eco-friendly transportation. Recently, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nishant Kumar Yadav directed the Engineering Department to use bitumen instead of concrete for constructing cycle tracks, aiming to provide a smoother and more comfortable ride for cyclists.
