Pakistan continues its nefarious activities along the international border. Smuggling networks operating from across the border are now using state-of-the-art, satellite-linked, high-capacity drones to transport heroin, weapons, IEDs, grenades, and explosives into Punjab. According to investigative agencies, this is not merely a new method of smuggling but also a serious technological challenge for border security.
Smugglers operating from across the border are increasingly utilizing satellite-linked drones. On May 24, the Counter Intelligence Wing of the Punjab Police recovered a satellite-linked drone from four smugglers apprehended in the border district of Ferozepur. Additionally, 28.12 kg of heroin and drug proceeds amounting to ₹19.5 lakh were seized. Why the challenge has intensified:
Traditional drones typically operate via GPS or radio frequencies, which have limited range. Security agencies can intercept them by jamming radio or GPS signals; however, satellite-linked drones connect directly to satellite communication networks. This allows them to fly over long distances and remain operational even in areas lacking mobile network coverage. Key features of this technology include real-time navigation, live video monitoring, and instant command-and-control capabilities. An operator can monitor every movement of the drone from a remote location and alter its course instantly.
This is why conventional anti-drone systems are proving less effective against them. According to investigative agencies, handlers across the border use these drones to drop consignments of heroin and weapons at pre-determined locations in Punjab’s border areas. Local smugglers then retrieve the consignments using encrypted messaging apps and precise location data, making it difficult for security agencies to track the operations. 403 Drones Recovered at the Border in 1.5 Years
While no official data has been released by the Punjab Police and BSF regarding the specific seizures of heroin and weapons delivered via drones, 403 drones of varying capacities and ranges have been seized along the Punjab border between March 1, 2025, and June 11, 2026. During this period, heroin, AK-47s, assault rifles, pistols, and large quantities of explosives were also recovered.
We Will Not Let Pakistan’s Designs Succeed: DGP
DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that the Punjab Police is working in tandem with the Border Security Force (BSF), acting as a second line of defense along the international border to intercept heroin and weapons being smuggled via drones. Anti-drone systems are also being installed. We will not allow any of Pakistan’s attempts to succeed.
