A dispute over picking Jamun fruit in Buttar Kalan village, Moga district, suddenly turned violent, escalating to the point of gunfire. A young man was critically injured in the incident and has been admitted to Medicity Hospital in Moga for treatment. The incident created an atmosphere of panic throughout the village.
According to the police, the complainant, Jagroop Singh, stated that he and his uncle, Satnam Singh, were farming on land belonging to a fellow villager, Nachhattar Singh. Meanwhile, their neighbors—Jora Singh and Dara Singh, who hail from the Sri Ganganagar region—were picking and eating fruit from a Jamun tree in the field. When the uncle stopped them from doing so, an argument broke out between the two parties.
**Firing at the person who intervened**
Family members allege that the situation escalated rapidly during the argument, and the accused began assaulting them. Amidst this, when Jagroop Singh stepped in to intervene, one of the accused fired a shot from a 12-bore rifle. The bullet struck Jagroop Singh’s son, Harshdeep Singh, leaving him critically injured. Chaos ensued at the scene, and the accused fled after the shooting. Locals immediately rushed the injured youth to the hospital. Doctors state that treatment is ongoing and his condition is being closely monitored.
**Police swung into action following the complaint**
The Badhni Kalan police registered a case based on the complaint and initiated an investigation. The investigating officer stated that, following a preliminary probe, both accused—Jora Singh and Dara Singh—have been arrested. They are being interrogated to uncover the full details behind the incident.
The police stated that serious charges regarding the use of a weapon and attempted murder have been added to the case. Meanwhile, police have stepped up vigilance in the village in view of the tension following the incident. Villagers have also demanded strict action against such incidents to ensure that similar occurrences do not happen again in the future.
