The process of restructuring the state unit has gained momentum under the leadership of the new Punjab BJP State President, Kewal Singh Dhillon. The party high command has appointed Satish Poonia—who is also the in-charge for Haryana BJP—as the in-charge for the formation of the new Punjab BJP state executive committee.
Poonia will hold discussions with senior leaders and office-bearers of the state unit before submitting his report to the party leadership; the new executive committee will be announced subsequently. According to sources, Satish Poonia has already initiated consultations with senior leaders. The objective of this process is to ensure balanced representation within the new team, comprising both veteran BJP leaders and those who have joined the party in recent years. Notably, the appointment of former Congress MLA Kewal Singh Dhillon as the Punjab BJP State President had sparked reports of resentment among some veteran organizational leaders. Against this backdrop, the BJP leadership aims to send a message of inclusivity and unity while forming the new executive committee.
Kewal Singh Dhillon joined the BJP after leaving the Congress in 2022
The 75-year-old Kewal Singh Dhillon joined the BJP in 2022 after quitting the Congress. He was recently appointed as the Punjab BJP State President, succeeding Sunil Jakhar. He holds the distinction of being the first Jat Sikh State President of the Punjab BJP.
According to a senior party leader, the high command desires that the new team provides adequate representation to all sections and leaders, ensuring there is no confusion or discontent within the organization. With this aim, Satish Poonia has been entrusted with the responsibility of assessing the organization’s current state by consulting all senior leaders.
Sources indicate that Poonia will soon complete the consultation process and submit a detailed report to the party leadership. This report will also include an assessment of the internal dynamics within the state unit.
Confirming Poonia’s appointment, State President Kewal Singh Dhillon expressed hope that the new state executive committee would be announced within the next seven to ten days. The BJP leadership aims to fully strengthen and unite the organization ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections. As part of this strategy, preparations are underway to finalize the organizational structure before Union Home Minister Amit Shah takes charge of the election campaign.
