Major news is breaking at this moment. The troubles facing former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi could be set to escalate. It has come to light that legal action may be initiated against him. According to reports, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has sought approval from the Punjab government to conduct an investigation against Charanjit Channi under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
According to the information received, the investigative process against Charanjit Channi has already commenced regarding a property-related matter in Goa involving the state of Punjab. Specifically, during Charanjit Channi’s tenure as Chief Minister, the government had intended to lease approximately 8 acres of land situated in Goa to a private hotel at a rate significantly lower than the prevailing market value; however, the deal in question ultimately failed to materialize. Dr. Sharad Satya Chauhan, the newly appointed Chief of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau, has formally requested permission from Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to investigate this specific case.
It is worth noting that Bhagwant Mann had previously raised this issue and had instructed the Vigilance Bureau to conduct an inquiry into the matter. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau had, in fact, sought permission for this investigation on a prior occasion as well; however, for various reasons, the case could not proceed at that time. Now, the Vigilance Bureau has once again approached the Punjab government to seek approval for this case. Even if the Bureau secures the necessary permission from the Punjab government, it will still be required to obtain authorization from the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, to conduct the investigation before initiating any formal action—this is because Charanjit Channi currently serves as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha. It now remains to be seen whether an investigation will indeed be launched against former CM Charanjit Channi once the requisite permission to pursue the case is granted.
Meanwhile, Charanjit Channi has also presented his stance regarding this matter. He has challenged the Punjab government to demonstrate where any financial loss occurred, pointing out that the deal in question was ultimately cancelled. Countering the allegations, he accused the Mann-led government of attempting to fabricate a false case against him. He asserted that he has been subjected to investigations on multiple occasions in the past, yet the government failed to uncover any incriminating evidence; he argued that, once again, a concerted effort is being made to frame him in a false case.
