The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has imposed a penalty on PSPCL. Reports indicate that PSPCL had sent an electricity bill of ₹35,000 to a retired teacher who was abroad at the time; he subsequently filed a complaint regarding this matter.
Providing details, Jagdish Singh Banga (70), a resident of Punjab Avenue, Subhana, stated that he and his wife were abroad from January 2020 to July 2021. During this period—which coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic—the department issued a bill amounting to thousands of rupees based on an average estimate rather than an actual meter reading. It was later discovered that his electricity meter was faulty; it was replaced only about six months after the complaint was lodged. Ruling on the matter, the Commission ordered the payment of ₹15,000 in compensation and ₹8,000 for litigation costs to the retired teacher.
